Self-paced Online Course: Medieval Sampler
In this self-paced online course, you will learn medieval goldwork embroidery's three most common couching techniques (with and without padding). You will use three different types of gold thread (real gold passing thread, Japanese thread and real gold twist) as well as linen sewing thread, Chinese flat silk and fresh-water pearls. All materials come close to what was used in the Middle Ages.
The course materials include a PDF with background information and instructions on how to access the five videos (setting up a slate frame, traditional pattern transfer and three stitching videos). The full embroidery kit includes: c. 55x45 cm Sotema 30L candido 46ct Linen, Stech 120/130 Seide/Echt Gold (comparable to 2% passing thread #5), Japanese thread #8, Cordonett #6 Seide/Echt Gold (comparable to 2% Twist #1,5), freshwater pearls, Chinese flat silk red & yellow, cotton string, linen string, linen sewing thread, needles and beeswax.
A traditional pattern transfer kit is also available for those who like to transfer the pattern onto their fabric in a medieval way. The transfer kit contains: grey pounce powder, a pounce pad, a pricker, a brush, iron gall ink and transparent paper. It is available from my webshop.
You will also need: an iron & ironing board, slate frame and materials for framing up, baby brush, scissors and pins. Use a device with a larger screen to view the videos. Mobile phones are not recommended!
This course is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. You only need to be able to thread a fine #12 needle (with magnification). Like the medieval originals, the work is fine and the finished pattern measures approx. 8.8 x 8.8 cm.
You will have access to the instruction videos for at least a year after the date of purchase. In addition, you will receive PDF instructions via email.
Great effort has been made to source the materials for this kit from small, family-owned businesses. Whenever possible, I will opt for ecological and fair trade products. The shipping box was made in India from recycled materials.
Shipping costs are added upon checkout. No refund once your kit has shipped.
