Self-paced Online Course: Wolfgang chasuble 11th-century
In this self-paced online course, you will learn medieval goldwork embroidery's two main techniques: couching and silk embroidery. You will use real gold passing thread, Chinese flat silk, silk twill and linen batiste. All materials come close to what was used in the original 11th-century embroidery.
There are two designs available: a bird and a quadruped. Both were inspired by the embroidery on the 11th-century Wolfgang chasuble. There are two kits available. The smaller kit contains enough material for either the bird OR the quadruped. The larger kit contains enough material for both the bird AND the quadruped. Please choose from the drop-down menu.
The course materials include a PDF with background information and instructions on how to access the three videos (setting up a slate frame, traditional pattern transfer and stitching video). The full embroidery kit includes: c. 55x45 cm Sotema 880 Batista Candido linen, Stech 50/60 Seide/Echt Gold (finer than 2% passing thread #3), Chinese flat silk red, brown, green and blue, and needles.
A traditional pattern transfer kit is also available for those who like to transfer the pattern onto their fabric in a medieval way. The transfer kit contains: grey pounce powder, a pounce pad, a pricker, a brush, iron gall ink and transparent paper. It is available from my webshop.
You will also need: an iron & ironing board, slate frame and materials for framing up, baby brush, scissors and pins. Use a device with a larger screen to view the videos. Mobile phones are not recommended!
This course is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. You only need to be able to thread a fine #10 needle (with magnification). Like the medieval originals, the work is fine and the finished pattern measures approx. 8.8 x 8.8 cm.
You will have access to the instruction videos for at least a year after the date of purchase. In addition, you will receive PDF instructions via email.
Great effort has been made to source the materials for this kit from small, family-owned businesses. Whenever possible, I will opt for ecological and fair trade products. The shipping box was made in India from recycled materials.
Shipping costs are added upon checkout. No refund once your kit has shipped.
