Domschatz Halberstadt 6th & 7th September 2025, daily 10:00-16:00 h
This design is based on a popular medieval embroidered depiction of the Nativity in Germany in the second half of the 15th century. The background consists of those characteristic ‘sunny spirals’ of laid and couched gold thread. This design will teach you silk embroidery, couching and a bit of beading with fresh-water pearls. You will be using the same embroidery techniques and comparable materials as were used in the originals.
In the workshop, you will learn how to dress a traditional embroidery frame. You will transfer the pattern onto the linen fabric using the traditional prick and pounce method and with ink. You will work with real silk threads and gilt gold threads. Stem stitch, split stitch and couching are practiced. A slate frame, pattern, pounce, iron gall ink, brush, sewing thread, needles, silk thread, gold thread, linen and instructions are included in the course fee. A Lowery stand and a magnifier lamp will be provided for the duration of the workshop. Bring along a pair of fine embroidery scissors and possibly writing materials for notes.
This workshop is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. You only need to be able to thread a fine #12 needle (with magnification). Like the medieval original, the work is very fine and the pattern measures approx. 16 x 20.5 cm.
Course fee: €362 for a full kit with 12 inch slate frame, €262 for a full kit only (when you already own a 12 inch slate frame). The fee includes two days of access to the museum.
Maximum number of participants: 10.

T&C: The course fee includes a full kit. If you choose the 'I bring my own 12-inch slate frame' option, I expect you to bring a traditional slate frame. Not a roller frame or anything else. If you are unsure that you have the right kind of frame, please contact me. If you turn up with the wrong frame, I reserve the right to deny you access to the workshop. The full course fee needs to be paid upon registration. The course fee is non-refundable. By placing this order you agree to this condition.
