Open Air Museum Glentleiten 5-6 August 2023, daily 10:00-16:00 h
Embroidery fragments from archaeological excavations prove that goldwork embroidery has been known in our region since the earliest Middle Ages. From the 11th century, more or less complete embroideries have been preserved. One of these pieces is the so-called Wolfgang Kasel, which is kept today in the Regensburg Cathedral Treasury. Birds and mammals surrounded by tendrils are depicted on the chasuble cross. Inspired by the Wolfgang chasuble, we will embroider a golden bird using the same embroidery techniques and comparable materials.
In the workshop, you will learn how to dress a traditional embroidery frame. You will transfer the pattern onto the silk fabric using the traditional prick and pounce method and with ink. You will work with real silk threads and gilt gold threads. Stem stitch, split stitch and couching are practiced. A slate frame, pattern, pounce, iron gall ink, brush, sewing thread, needles, silk thread, gold thread, linen, silk and (video) instructions are included in the course fee. A Lowery stand and a magnifier lamp will be provided for the duration of the workshop. Bring along a pair of fine embroidery scissors and possibly writing materials for notes.
This workshop is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. You only need to be able to thread a fine #10 needle (with magnification). Like the medieval original, the work is very fine and the pattern measures approx. 8.5 x 8.5 cm.
Course fee: €375 (if you already own a 12 inch slate frame, the course fee is €275).
Registration: Website Glentleiten. Maximum number of participants: 10. As registration is through the museum, I am deligthed that I can take bookings from UK-participants too!
