Domschatz Halberstadt 31st August- 1st September 2024, daily 10:00-16:00 h
The design of this workshop is based on a mitre kept in the treasury of Halberstadt Cathedral. It was made around AD 1300 and is one of the most precious pieces to survive to this day. We will try to recreate a small piece of this luxury in this workshop. You will learn how to set up a traditional slate frame and to transfer the design with the traditional prick-and-pounce method. The design uses simple couching and beading techniques. You will use gilt beads, semi-precious stone beads, fresh-water pearls and real gold threads on heavy silk twill backed with fine Italian linen. All materials come close to what was used in the Middle Ages. As the workshop takes place in the Domschatz Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of medieval embroidery in Europe, you will have ample opportunity to compare your work with the original mitre.
A slate frame, transfer materials, sewing thread, needles, silk twill, linen, silk thread, beeswax, real gold thread, all gilt and semi-precious stone beads, fresh-water pearls and instructions are included in the course fee. A Lowery stand and a magnifier lamp will be provided for the duration of the workshop. Bring a pair of fine embroidery scissors and possibly writing materials for notes.
This workshop is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. You only need to be able to thread a fine #12 needle (with magnification). Like the medieval originals, the work is fine and the pattern measures approx. 7 x 7 cm.
Course fee: TBC (if you already own a 12-inch slate frame, the course fee is TBC). The course fee includes two days of access to the museum. Booking will open as soon as I have all my costings in!
Maximum number of participants: 10.
